California cops threaten to kill man's dog if he does not falsely confess to killing father - who was still alive
California cops have agreed to pay a nearly $1million settlement after they forced a confession out of a mentally unstable man by threatening to kill his dog if he did not falsely admit to murdering his father - who was alive and well. Thomas Perez Jr was questioned by police for over 17 hours in 2018 in an interrogation that amounted to 'unconstitutional psychological torture,' according to the judge. Perez reported his father missing to police. He was never formally arrested, but was still taken to the Fontana Police Department on August 8, 2018 to be questioned. He was told by officers that if he didn't confess to murdering his father, they would have to put his dog to sleep due to 'depression' over witnessing a murder that never occurred. After hours of interrogation, Perez became visibly distressed and resorted to self destructive acts including pulling his hair out, hitting himself and tearing off his shirt. The judge said he was 'sleep deprived, mentally ill, and, significantly, undergoing symptoms of withdrawal from his psychiatric medications.' Perez also had reportedly begged for medical attention but was never provided his psychiatric medication.

He was told his father was found dead with stab wounds, however, police soon after found his father alive and well. Perez's sister said her father was with a 'lady friend.'
A detective reportedly told him: 'How can you sit there, how can you sit there and say you don't know what happened, and your dog is sitting there looking at you, knowing that you killed your dad?
'Look at your dog. She knows, because she was walking through all the blood.'
After 17 hours of interrogation, Perez finally admitted to the crime he didn't commit.When the two interrogating officers left Perez alone in the room, he attempted suicide by hanging.
California Judge Dolly Gee ruled last June that the evidence in the case would convince the jury that the questioning amounted to 'unconstitutional psychological torture.'
Footage of the interrogation was released, sparking outrage and a long legal battle before the city of Fontana, California, finally agreed to a $900,000 settlement.
His lawyer Jerry Steering told the Orange County Register, 'Mentally torturing a false confession out of Tom Perez, concealing from him that his father was alive and well, and confining him in the psych ward because they made him suicidal.'
'In my 40 years of suing the police I have never seen that level of deliberate cruelty by the police,' he continued.
'This case shows that if the police are skilled enough, and they grill you hard enough, they can get anybody to confess to anything.' Source

A solar-terrestrial effect strongly influences volcanism
The presentation focuses on a strong influence of solar wind on seismic and volcanic activity. The activity rates correlate with the solar wind speed and with the geomagnetic indices which reflect the solar induced disturbances of the Earth's magnetic field, Dst and Kp. The data bases of the Global Volcanism Program (Washington), of ISGI (Paris), the USGS, the Osservatorio Vesuviano INGV (Naples) and the OMNIweb (NASA) were accessed. In an early paper (Duma & Vilardo, 1997) it was shown already that seismic activity in the area Mt.Vesuvius varies parallel to the three solar cycles no. 20, 21, 22 (maxima 1969, 1980, 1989). The data set comprises thousands of weak earthquakes M ≤ 3.4. Such a solar effect appears not only in the long term but distinctly in the diurnal range, too, in dependence of the 24 hour cycle of the ionospheric Sq current system. The results of the present study reveal that the seismic activity at Mt.Vesuvius still reacted to this solar impact in the recent period 1999 - 2013. In additon, numerous studies in the past two decades show that this geodynamic influence acts not only on volcanic regions but on many of the main earthquake zones on the globe, causing fluctuations in seismic activity even for events M>6 (e.g. Duma & Ruzhin, 2003; Lipovics, 2005; Duma, 2010). Statistic analyses of time series of seismic strain release and Kp over decades indicated an average significance level of 97% for 9 main earthquake zones. Examples are given which illustrate the effect in seismic regions in N-Italy (fromUmbria to Emilia-Romagna) and S-Italy (Calabria to l'Abruzzo). As to the activity of volcanic eruptions, there is a strong indication that the same solar effect enhances the frequency of eruptions in periods of high solar flare activity of the solar cycles. This is shown not only for Mt. Etna but also for other main volcanoes on the globe, the Mt. St. Helens (USA), Mt. Unzen (Japan), Pinatubo (Philippines) and El Chichon (Mexico). Since the effect can be verified in so many regions, it seems to be a very general and powerful effect with far reaching mechanic implications for seismic as well as volcanic activity. Source

Eleven injured as Transair Boeing 737-300 exits runway upon departure Dakar Airport
On 9 May, a Transair Boeing 737-300 (registered 6V-AJE) operated flight HC301 on behalf of Air Senegal from Dakar, Senegal to Bamako, Male. The aircraft experienced a hydraulic issue during acceleration for take-off on runway 01 resulting in a runway excursion.
After standstill, the passengers evacuated the aircraft. Besides two pilots and four crew members, the flight carried 78 passengers. Eleven of them sustained injuries, four of whom are reported to be in critical condition.
The airport authorities suspended all flight activity. In the meantime, the airport reopened for operations. Source
