California Marine Nicole Gee, 23, who cradled baby at Kabul airport, killed in Afghanistan attack
Marine Sgt. Nicole Gee celebrated the joy of service just days before she was one of 13 U.S. service members killed in Thursday's suicide bombing attack near Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan.
A week ago, Gee, 23, posted a photo on Instagram that showed her holding a baby at that airport. She added a simple, profound comment: "I love my job." The same photo was posted by the Department of Defense on Aug. 21.
Gee, from Sacramento, California, served as a maintenance technician with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit from Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. On her Instagram page, she described herself as a "positive mental attitude advocate." The locations listed on her page include California, North Carolina and "somewhere overseas."
Another photo on Gee's Instagram page shows her earlier in the week, on duty with her rifle next to a line of people waiting to board a transport plane. She described her assignment as "escorting evacuees onto the bird.” Source

Arkansas' official poisons hotline has received four times more calls about a deworming drug being used as an unauthorized COVID treatment this year than it has over the last four years combined.
The Arkansas Poison Center has received 24 calls from people who've ingested Ivermectin so far this year, having previously received just six such calls in total between 2016 and 2020.
While ivermectin can be used to treat other conditions in people, experts say the doses given to animals is far higher, and should never be ingested by people. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has warned Americans it is dangerous to take ivermectin as a COVID treatment, although it continues to fly off the shelves
Large doses of this drug, however, can cause serious harm to humans if ingested.
Those who ingested the drug were reported suffering from gastrointestinal issues as well as neurological in some.
'Ivermectin can be prescribed off label for other uses, and that is a decision between a physician and a patient,' Arkansas Secretary of Health Jose Romero told KATV. On August 24, a warning was issued by The State Health Department to avoid using the drug as a way of treating COVID-19.
Dr. Marti Sharkey, the public health officer for the city of Fayetteville, said that the belief Ivermectin could be used as a treatment method came from a study that showed high doses of the drug did prevent COVID-19 from reproducing.
'We have a vaccine that is FDA approved that prevents serious illness and death, and monoclonal antibodies have been approved by the FDA for emergency use, decreasing the need for hospitalization for those with a high risk of complications', Sharkey told the Arkansas Democrat Gazette.
'We have tools that we know work. I do not understand why you would turn to a therapy that is not approved by the FDA, is unproven against Covid-19 and potentially lethal.' Source

While some forms of Ivermectin can be prescribed to humans who are suffering from parasitic worms or lice, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has repeatedly urged people not to use the drug against the coronavirus. 'You can also overdose on ivermectin, which can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hypotension (low blood pressure), allergic reactions (itching and hives), dizziness, ataxia (problems with balance), seizures, coma and even death,' the FDA warned.

The Taliban has been showing off its own "special forces" on social media, soldiers in new uniforms equipped with looted American equipment who contrast sharply with the image of the usual Afghan insurgent.
Pictures and videos of fighters in the so-called "Badri 313" unit have been posted online for propaganda purposes to underline how the Taliban have better equipped and trained men at their disposal than in the past, experts say.
The soldiers are shown in uniforms, boots, balaclavas and body armour similar to those worn by special forces around the world -- and unlike the shalwar kameez, turban and sandals of the traditional Taliban fighter.
Rather than a battered Russian-designed Kalashnikov rifle slung over their shoulder, the men of Badri 313 hold new US-made rifles such as the M4, sometimes with night-vision goggles and advanced gunsights.
Badri 313 "likely represents some of the best trained and equipped fighters within the Taliban more broadly, although as you would expect there is a degree of sensationalising in propaganda coverage of the unit by the group," Matt Henman from the Janes defence consultancy told AFP.
A Western weapons expert who writes anonymously on Twitter under the pseudonym of Calibre Obscura said the unit would be no match for Western special forces, or those of India or Pakistan.
But "they are more effective than normal Taliban and certainly more than standard Afghan national army troops from a couple of weeks ago," he told AFP. Source

An official death toll has not yet been given but according to those on the ground including a New York Times reporter who counted 40 dead bodies. The Wall Street Journal said 60 Afghans had died. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby released a statement saying a 'number' had died, but he wouldn't give any additional details. Other troops are feared to have been injured.
Biden's meetings were canceled on Thursday immediately after the attack while he spoke with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley.
Neither the President or anyone in the administration has offered a plan for getting out the remaining troops and civilians before August 31, the Taliban's deadline.
Norway, Poland, Holland and Canada have all stopped evacuating citizens. In a statement on Thursday afternoon, Norway's Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Soereide said the doors at the airport are 'closed'.
The State Department is telling Americans stuck in Afghanistan to stay in their homes, while Britain has told its stranded citizens to make a run for the Pakistan border, along with thousands of Afghan refugees. Source

Portland gunfight fuels alarm over growing use of weapons at rallies
A gunfight in Portland, Oregon, last week is intensifying concerns over escalating violence during contentious rallies in the city, as far-right demonstrators and anti-fascist counter-protesters have repeatedly faced off.
The Portland police bureau charged a 65-year-old man from Gresham, Oregon, over a gunfight in the city’s downtown during violent clashes on Sunday. Authorities say Dennis Anderson drew a concealed handgun and shot at a group of anti-fascists who were trying to expel him from the area. At least one of the anti-fascists shot back, according to authorities, with seven shots exchanged between the two sides.
Proud Boys and members of other far-right groups regularly open-carry handguns during protest, and the shootout fueled the growing concern about the presence of firearms at rallies taking place across the US.
But other violent incidents in Portland on Sunday showed how participants have also increasingly adopted less lethal, but still dangerous, technologies as weapons for political street fighting. On Sunday afternoon, about 200 Proud Boys and members of other far-right groups clashed with a smaller group of anti-fascists near an abandoned Kmart in the city’s outer north-east. The confrontation became a running street battle, with participants fist-fighting and attacking each other with pepper spray.
The two camps also resorted to other tactics they had deployed during previous demonstrations. Anti-fascists threw fireworks, repeating a tactic that some leftwing protesters have long used in contentious events in Portland and beyond. Similar munitions were used in several confrontations with police during Portland’s long string of protests last summer, in the wake of the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
At one point on Sunday, a firework thrown by an anti-fascist exploded in the forecourt of a gas station, raising alarm on all sides of the confrontation.
Some Proud Boys, on the other hand, were carrying airsoft guns, replica firearms that fire pellets with compressed air and are usually used in recreational combat games or combat training. Source

A rampaging gunman killed three people during a deadly spree of shootings and arsons before dying in his burning truck after a firefighter with cops in Washington on Wednesday.
The unidentified suspect was discovered in West Richland on Wednesday after rampaging across nearby Finley and Kennewick, shooting and torching buildings in the early hours of the morning.
Four officers were involved in a shootout with the truck driver. The vehicle somehow became engulfed in flames and ammunition was heard exploding from inside.The burned body of the gunman was later discovered inside the vehicle.
He had earlier killed grandfather Emil Robert 'Bob' Zlatich Jr. in Finley, and left his son, also Emil Robert Zlatich, wounded.
Two other victims were also killed in Kennewick after the suspect set fire to buildings belonging to a labor union, according to KEPR. Police rushed to reports of shooting and fires in Finley shortly before 4am and discovered two homes in flames.
The suspect then set more fires throughout Benton County and carried out arsons on facilities belonging to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers labor union in Kennewick.
Two more bodies were later found in Kennewick, which police believe are connected to the earlier killing.
The suspect's truck was later found in West Richland where a gun battle erupted between the suspect and four officers who shot at his car.
A fire started inside the pick-up and live ammunition could be heard going off inside.
The body of an unidentified person was later recovered from the burned vehicle. Source

The US Capitol is in lockdown while police negotiate with a man in a pick-up truck demanding airstrikes in Afghanistan to 'kick the Taliban's a**' outside the Library of Congress, and saying he'll blow up entire blocks if Biden doesn't come to speak to him. The man in the truck is believed to be 49-year-old Ray Roseberry from North Carolina. At 9.15am this morning, he drove his black pick-up truck onto the sidewalk outside the Library of Congress, opposite the Capitol building. Congress is in recess so no elected officials are there but there are staffers who are still working in the Capitol buildings. He then called 911, reporting that he had a bomb and wanted to speak to the President. Roseberry then started a Facebook livestream that has since been removed, but where he claimed he had a 'tannerite bomb' and wanted to speak to Joe Biden, saying the 'revolution is here.'
He is demanding airstrikes in Afghanistan, where tens of thousands are waiting to be rescued by the US military after Biden's decision to withdraw troops. 'First thing we want is air strikes in Afghanistan. Kick the Taliban's ass and keep them from killing people. 'We’re living in a free country Joe, the choice is yours. On August 14-15, 22 military planes and 24 military helicopters from Afghanistan, carrying 585 armed servicemen of the neighboring country, illegally crossed Uzbekistan's airspace. The aircrafts were forced to land at the international airport of Termez, the press service of the General Prosecutor's Office of Uzbekistan reported on Monday.On August 15, three military aircraft Embraer 314 of Afghanistan requested permission to land at the airport of Khanabad in Karshi. They were redirected to Termez airport with two Uzbekistan Air Force MiG-29 military planes escorting them. "However, during the escort, the Embraer 314 and MiG-29 planes collided and crashed in the Sherabad district of Surkhandarya region. The pilots of these aircrafts ejected and landed on parachutes," the statement said. "The next day this statement was retracted without further explanation of what happened, but fresh satellite images started to appear on the Uzbek Termez airport, showing the appearance of almost fifty new planes and helicopters, whose appearance coincides with that of the Afghan Air Force and the number almost identical to that mentioned in the Uzbek prosecutor`s statement. It was not easy to make out the aircraft models in the first satellite image, but now better quality images are appearing.
In the end 22 new light aircraft and 26 helicopters appeared in Termez. Of these, 11 Pilatus PC-12NG light reconnaissance planes, part of the Special Operations Wing of the Afghan Air Force, attracted special attention, the remainder being six A-29 (Embraer 314) Super Tucano light attack aircraft and five Cessna 208 Caravan light aircraft (perhaps some of these were armed versions of the AC-208 Combat Caravan). Among the helicopters at the Termez airport we can see 19 Mi-8/17 and 7 UH-60A Black Hawk. Even Left-wing outlets such as CNN and The New York Times that would traditionally back a Democrat president have hit out at Mr Biden for his role in allowing insurgents to take Kabul after routing Afghan forces in just a week.
The Wall Street Journal condemned Joe Biden's statement 'washing his hands' of the situation, saying it should 'go down as one of the most shameful in history by a Commander in Chief at such a moment of American retreat'. mAs the crisis deepened, a CNN columnist said the 'debacle of the US defeat and chaotic retreat in Afghanistan' was a 'political disaster' for the US President and slammed his 'failure to orchestrate an urgent and orderly exit'.
And an opinion writer in The Atlantic said there was enough blame attached for the Afghanistan crisis to 'fill a library of books', condemning the 'betrayal' of the Afghan people as he placed the 'burden of shame' on Mr Biden.
Meanwhile a New York Post editorial said Mr Biden's claims that he 'inherited' his predecessor Donald Trump's withdrawal plans were a 'lie' and the situation is 'as humiliating an end as the rooftop scramble in Saigon in 1975'.
An opinion piece in The New York Times claimed that Mr Biden would 'go down in history, fairly or unfairly, as the president who presided over a long-brewing, humiliating final act in the American experiment in Afghanistan'.
A Washington Post column said the situation 'is on Biden, and it will leave an indelible stain on his presidency', while a piece in USA Today said 'this catastrophe is appearing on his watch, and he will have to take his lumps'.
Fox News ran a comment from Republican Senator Joni Ernst condemning the 'slap in the face to the thousands of men and women who served in this war' and a 'total abandonment of a country and its people' by Mr Biden.
Columnists in the British Press also hit out at Mr Biden today, with The Sun's editorial saying he 'ignored repeated warnings, then withdrew crucial air support for the Afghan army it has spent billions arming over 20 years'.
Commons Foreign Affairs Committee chair Tom Tugendhat wrote in The Times that it was the 'the biggest foreign policy disaster since Suez' in 1957, while a columnist for the i condemned the 'betrayal of Afghanistan's people'.
The Financial Times said the 'abandonment of Afghanistan raises doubts over the depth of US commitment to supposed allies', while Mark Almond wrote in the Daily Mail that Islamist fundamentalism is now 'back on a roll'. Source

Why did Jake Davison kill five people in Plymouth? One of the key questions for investigators right now is what, if any, role his belief in "incel" culture played in his murderous decisions.
The movement has been linked to serious violence around the world but, at the same time, experts in security and ideology say it would be wrong to call it a terror group.
Incel is short for "involuntary celibate". People who define themselves as incel say they can't get a sex life despite the fact that they want to be in a relationship.
The idea dates back 30 years and was popularised by a website offering support for lonely people who felt left behind.
But over the years, incel beliefs morphed. Some forums are full of self-pity. Some are now dominated by grievance.
The men taking part express misogyny and an unfulfilled sense of entitlement to sex that women are withholding from them.Some incels advocate violence against women - and the men who are lucky enough to be in happy relationships.
Florence Keen, who researches incels at the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation at Kings College London, says that one of the biggest forums has 13,000 active members and around 200,000 threads.
"The caveat I would always give is that we can't say that the whole of the incel subculture is violent," she says.
"It really varies. Some will glorify violence while others [in these forums] will say 'this is not what we are'."

How many incel threats have there been in the UK?
Before the Plymouth shootings, the prosecution of Anwar Driouich from Middlesbrough was one of the most prominent British cases.
Driouich was jailed last year for possession of ingredients for explosives and bomb-making manuals used by other terrorist groups.When he was arrested in 2019, police weren't sure what his ideology actually was. He was obsessed with US shootings and terror attacks and posted on social media that he wanted to carry out a mass murder.
A significant piece of evidence in the case about his mindset was that he visited an incel website and group chat about emulating Elliot Rodger - but prosecutors did not explicitly allege that he was primarily motivated by the movement or a hatred of women.
In another recent case, a jury in Edinburgh convicted 22-year-old Gabrielle Friel of possessing weapons for a terrorist purpose, but it also found that the allegation that his actions were motivated by incel beliefs was not proven.
What's become clear to investigators in both the police and MI5, as they scoop up the social media footprint left behind by the extremists, is how much cross-over there now is among a myriad of splintered extreme ideologies.
As of last September, almost 40% of reports sent to Prevent, the UK's national scheme for identifying people on the verge of violent extremism, were for "mixed ideologies". Incel beliefs were part of the mix.
Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, the head of UK counter-terrorism policing, told Parliament's Home Affairs Committee: "We don't know whether it is Islamist, or right wing, or left wing extremism or incel or....they are just interested in violence."
Another factor of concern is that many suspects in this group are very young - to all intents and purposes, isolated teenagers spending all of their lives in an online world.
This year a 16-year-old boy from Birmingham admitted three terrorism offences for possessing gun and bomb manuals.
The boy had a general fascination with terrorism, violence and inceldom.
From the age of 11, he had constantly posted in a forum about the Columbine massacre, taking part in disturbing exchanges stating that all women "deserve" to die. The prosecution case was that he did not hold any fixed ideology. Source

Sheffield UK Link FM Radio Station Faces Sanction Over 'Jihadi' Chant: Station Intentionally Played 'Jundallah' Or "Soldiers Of Allah" For UK Jihadists......
A community radio station faces sanctions after broadcasting an Islamic chant said to contain "Jihadi lyrics" and "promoting terrorism".
Sheffield-based Link FM was found to have committed two serious breaches of Ofcom's broadcasting code by playing the "Nasheed" chant twice in 2020.
The chant contained material likely to "encourage or incite the commission of crime or lead to disorder", Ofcom said.
Licensee the Pakistan Muslim Centre said it "apologised wholeheartedly". In a report, Ofcom, the broadcasting watchdog, said Link FM had broadcast a chant called "Jundallah" or "Soldiers of Allah".
It said: "Although this Nasheed didn't contain any direct call to violent action, we consider cumulative effect of lyrics and imagery was to condone, promote and actively encourage others to participate in violent acts as a form of devout religious expression and therefore amounted to an indirect call to action."
It added that the lyrics "sought to condone, promote and encourage violent Jihad as a legitimate expression of Islamic faith and glorify an ideology associated with Jihad, including martyrdom" and that such Nasheed chants "are used by terrorist groups to attract potential recruits".
'Quite embarrassed'
The Ofcom report said the Pakistan Muslim Centre had apologised for what it described as an "error" and an "unfortunate incident".
It said the presenter who broadcast the chant did not speak Arabic and the piece had not been vetted.
In a letter to Ofcom, the presenter apologised and said she felt "quite embarrassed" and had "no intentions of inciting hatred or negativity of any shape or form".
Concluding that Link FM was in breach of the broadcasting code, Ofcom said it was "minded to consider these breaches for the imposition of a statutory sanction".
Link FM is the second Sheffield-based community radio station to be found in breach of Ofcom's code in recent years.
In 2017, Imam FM was taken off air after it broadcast 25 hours of lectures by Anwar Al-Awlaki, a US-born radical Muslin cleric, killed in a US drone strike in Yemen in 2011. Source

A GUNMAN left five dead including a child under ten in a suburban bloodbath last night.
Crane operator Jake Davison, 23, stormed a home armed with a long-barrelled gun and blasted a woman, believed to be his mum, his sister and his brother.
The man, dressed in black and grey, then ran into the street and continued his rampage, firing randomly at passers-by on Biddick Drive as he made his way to a nearby park.
Davison killed a young girl aged under 10 as she walked her dog with her family and also killed another bystander, believed to be a man.
After randomly firing at injuring several other terrified passers-by, he then turned the gun on himself just after 6pm yesterday.
Early today police confirmed three female victims had died along with three males - including the gunman. Source

Plymouth shooting updates: Police confirm several dead and critical incident declared
Police have declared a critical incident after a shooting killed a number of people and injured several others.
The incident started just after 6pm in the Keyham area of Plymouth and at least three air ambulances landed in North Prospect this evening.
Eyewitnesses told Plymouth Live they could hear "loud bangs" and "gun shots". Several police officers and paramedics are at the scene and roads in the area have been cordoned off.A Devon and Cornwall Police statement was released at 9.15pm. It read: "Police were called to a serious firearms incident in Biddick Drive in the Keyham area of Plymouth at around 6.10pm today. Officers are ambulance staff attended.
"There have been a number of fatalities at the scene and several other casualties are receiving treatment. A critical incident has been declared." Source

A GUNMAN shot dead five people before being shot dead in Plymouth tonight - as an MP warned of a "grim day for our city".
Armed cops and at least four air ambulances flooded the Keyham suburb after locals said they heard "gunshots" shortly after 6pm.
Police have confirmed that there have been multiple fatalities, but it is not believed to be terror related at this time according to Sky News.
It is understood that five people have been killed by the gunman in the bloody rampage this evening.
The shooter is also believed to have died, but it is not clear if it was self-inflicted or by armed police officers.
Sharron Turner, 57, who lives nearby said that a gunman had “kicked in” the front door of a semi-detached house and shot a young mother and her daughter, who was aged about five.
She told the Times that the man was dressed in black and grey, armed with a semi-automatic weapon.
After the attack the gunman escaped through a park behind the house and shot two dog walkers.
Sharron added: “We heard a number of loud bangs which I said sounded like gunshots.
"Then he ran into the park and there were further shots. I heard someone say he had shot his brother."
Robert Pinkerton aged 54, said he was on Henderson Place , when he heard a loud bang.
He told PlymouthLive that he turned a corner before bumping into the gunman, and "swerved" when he saw the gun.
Robert added that he spotted a man tending to an injured woman in the doorway of a hairdressers.
A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police were called to a serious firearms incident in Biddick Drive, in the Keyham area of Plymouth at around 6.10pm today.
"Officers and ambulance staff attended. There have been a number of fatalities at the scene and several other casualties are receiving treatment.
"A critical incident has been declared. The area has been cordoned off and police believe the situation is contained.
"Road closures are in place so please avoid the area. We are appealing to the public not to speculate or share pictures of the scene on social media or anywhere else.
"We will provide more information on log number 768 of 12/08/21 as soon as we can."
Footage circulating online appeared to show a bloodied victim on the ground surrounded by armed police.
In one video posted to social media an armed officer can be heard telling members of the public to "walk away" from the scene.
Police dogs are also on scene searching the area within the cordon, with the emergency response appearing to centre on North Down Crescent near a school and kids' playground.
'GRIM DAY'
Local MPs have described the situation s "very serious", adding that it is a "grim day" for their community.
Luke Pollard MP said: "There looks to be a very serious situation happening in Keyham. Please can everyone stay safe, stay indoors and follow police advice.
"Awaiting confirmation of number of victims but this looks like a very grim day for our city and our community.
"I know a lot of people are worried whether the shooting is now over. I’ve spoken with the police again and to confirm it is now over but some victims are still being treated.
"Please stay safe tonight, hug loved ones and keep the victims in your thoughts."
Johnny Mercer MP added: "I am aware of a serious and tragic incident unfolding in Plymouth.
"The incident is not terror related, and neither is the suspect on the run in Plymouth. Remain calm.
"It is for the Police to confirm further details. Do not repost chatter or gossip; work with them. We have the best cops in the land."
It was the first "active shooter" rampage seen in the UK for 11 years since cabbie Derrick Bird murdered 12 people in Cumbria in June 2010.
Home Secretary Priti Patel said: "The incident in Plymouth is shocking and my thoughts are with those affected. I have spoken to the Chief Constable and offered my full support.
"I urge everyone to remain calm, follow police advice and allow our emergency services to get on with their jobs."
South Western Ambulance spokesman said: "We were called at 18:12 to an ongoing incident in Plymouth.
"We responded to the incident with a significant number of resources, including Hazardous Area Response Teams (HART), multiple ambulances, air ambulances, multiple doctors and senior paramedics." Source

A college professor suspected in a series of arson fires in remote forested areas of Northern California near the massive Dixie Fire has been charged in connection with one of the blazes in Lassen County and was ordered held Tuesday in the Sacramento County Main Jail.
Gary Stephen Maynard, 47, is believed to have worked at a number of colleges in California, including Santa Clara University and Sonoma State University, where a Dr. Gary Maynard is listed as a lecturer in criminal justice studies specializing in criminal justice, cults and deviant behavior.
Sonoma State spokeswoman Julia Gonzalez said Maynard is no longer with the university.“He was a part-time lecturer in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice,” she wrote in an email. “He was employed with Sonoma State University in Fall 2020, but did not have an appointment for Spring 2021.
“Mr. Maynard was contracted to fill in for a faculty member who was on leave. He taught two seminars in Criminology and Criminal Justice Studies in Fall 2020.” Santa Clara confirmed that Maynard had worked there, as well.
“Gary Maynard was an adjunct faculty member in the sociology department at Santa Clara University from September 2019 to December 2020,” the university wrote in an emailed statement.
Maynard was arrested Saturday following an investigation that began July 20 and included a U.S. Forest Service agent placing a tracking device under his car after he had been stopped briefly by Susanville police on Aug. 3.
Maynard, whose middle name is alternately spelled “Stephan” in jail records, made a brief appearance Tuesday in federal court in Sacramento, where Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Anderson asked that he not be released from custody.
“There are simply no conditions that could be fashioned that could ensure the safety of the public with respect to this defendant,” Anderson told U.S. Magistrate Judge Kendall J. Newman. Source
