Atlas Air's Boeing cargo plane makes emergency landing after engine malfunction
Jan 19 (Reuters) - An Atlas Air Boeing 747-8 (BA.N), opens new tab cargo plane with five crew members made an emergency landing at Miami International Airport (MIA) late Thursday after facing an engine malfunction shortly after departure.
Unverified videos on social media platform X showed flames shooting out of the left wing of the aircraft while in flight. No injuries were reported, the airport told Reuters.
"The crew followed all standard procedures and safely returned to MIA," the air-freight company said, adding that it would conduct an inspection to find the cause. Explosions Reported at One of Russia's Largest Chemical Plants
Explosions have been reported at one of Russia's largest chemical plants in the Rostov region that borders Ukraine.
The pro-Ukrainian Eastern European news outlet Nexta said on Telegram Monday that local residents heard explosions before a fire started at the state-owned Kamensky plant in the city of Kamensk-Shakhtinsky. It would mark the latest unexplained explosion to take place at a Russian facility. There have been a string of mysterious fires in Russia since President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
Newsweek couldn't immediately verify the report and has contacted the Russian defense ministry for comment by email. "Workers were evacuated," NEXTA reported, publishing a nine-second clip that shows huge plumes of black smoke rising into the air.
It described the facility as "at one of the largest chemical enterprises in the south of the Russian Federation." Source

Russian chemical plant on fire after 'several explosions' spark huge plume of smoke
A Russian chemical plant has gone up in flames after it was rocked by "several explosions".
In a yet-to-be-verified photo posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, flames and plumes of smoke have been seen rising from Russia's Kamensky chemical plant in Russia's Rostov region. It's unclear what caused the explosions or if there are any casaulties.
It comes after a tragic incident befell the same chemical plant back in 2021. Six workers in a secret weapons-making section of the plant died after suffering “horrific burns” in a mysterious “explosion”, it is was reported at the time. Only one out of a team of seven remained alive and was is in grave condition following the blast. Source

The natural gas distribution company says its system was not involved in Monday's Fort Worth hotel explosion.FORT WORTH, Texas — Atmos Energy has said that after completing safety checks and an investigation, the natural gas distribution company has reportedly found no indication that its system was involved in this week's Fort Worth hotel explosion. As of Friday, officials are saying that 21 people were injured from the explosion at the Sandman Signature Fort Worth Downtown Hotel that happened on Monday afternoon. There have been no confirmed fatalities, according to officials. It is still unknown exactly what caused the explosion or how it was started. Fort Worth Fire Chief Jim Davis said that there was no purposeful intent to cause harm behind the explosion. There was a gas element, but Davis said it's unclear whether the gas or explosion came first. "We appreciate the partnership with the Fort Worth Fire and Police Departments and all officials participating in the response and will continue to assist their investigation," Atmos Energy said in a released statement Friday. Fire department spokesman Craig Trojacek said officials were investigating to confirm if there was a gas leak, as a strong smell of gas was reported downtown.

But it was unclear if the smell was caused by the explosion itself or if it caused the explosion.
Trojacek also said there were reports the explosion started in the restaurant of the hotel, Musume, and that there was some construction being done at the restaurant, but officials were not 100% sure where the explosion started.
On Tuesday, a FEMA engineer was sent to inspect the building. During the inspection, the agency sent their cadaver dogs inside and around the building to search for any victims that could have been trapped in the rubble.
"Search and rescue operations occurred through the night and continued this morning with specifically trained canines. At this time, no additional victims have been located," the City of Fort Worth said in a statement to WFAA.
No one has been reported missing.
Some attorneys told WFAA Thursday that they expect that the explosion will prompt lawsuits as at least one firm is advertising to potential Fort Worth plaintiffs using targeted social media posts.
"Everybody has a right to be safe," Zehl and Associates named partner Ryan Zehl told WFAA Thursday. "Everybody has a right to avoid negligence, and everybody has a right to stay clear of someone else breaking rules, procedures, or laws that could cause injury." US and UK unleash major bombardment on Yemen: Missiles rain down on Iran-backed Houthi rebel strongholds after Air Force jets were spotted flying over Saudi
Airstrikes by the US and UK militaries have begun against Houthi military targets in Yemen.
Missiles began raining down on the capital Sana'a on Thursday night, after the US warned of 'consequences' if the Iranian-backed rebels did not stop targeting ships in the Red Sea.
President Biden is expected to make a statement in the wake of the airstrikes, the Times reports. Air force recon jets were seen flying over Saudi Arabia in the run up to the strike. The Boeing RC-135 was spotted on Flight24 radar above Riyadh.
Commercial airplanes were also seen evacuating the skies prior to the attack. Joint US and British forces shot down 18 drones and three missiles launched by the Houthis late Tuesday, in what was described as their biggest attack so far in solidarity with Palestinians in Hamas-ruled Gaza.
Antony Blinken warned of 'consequences' if the Houthi do not stop attacking ships in the Red Sea, and called on Iran to end their support for the rebels.
'We've been clear with more than 20 other countries that if this continues as it did yesterday that there will be consequences,' he said on Wednesday.
When asked if there would be consequences for Iran, he added: 'We've also repeatedly tried to make clear to Iran as other countries have as well that the support hat they are providing to the Houthis needs to stop.
'It's not in their interests to see these conflicts escalated and we're not the only one who sent that message to Iran.
'These attacks have been aided and abetted by Iran with technology equipment and intelligence and they are having a real life impact on people.'
It comes at a fraught time for the US - as Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is reeling from his prostate cancer operation. He has been in hospital for over a week.
On Wednesday, the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution on demanding an immediate end to the Houthi attacks.
On Thursday British stealth jets and combat drones were being readied for the airstrike with warships moved into the Red Sea in recent days. Source

Explosion at Texas hotel scatters debris across downtown Fort Worth, multiple people injured
FORT WORTH, Texas -- An explosion at a Texas hotel in Fort Worth on Monday littered downtown streets with large section of building and debris and injured multiple people, authorities said.
Investigators believe the blast was caused by natural gas, said Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives spokesperson Sara Abel, who was briefed by local police.
Aerial footage in Fort Worth, Texas, showed debris from the hotel scattered across downtown streets as authorities said they were responding to a "major incident" and urged people to avoid the area. The Sandman Signature hotel is in a busy area of downtown about one block from the Fort Worth Convention Center.
Fort Worth City Councilman Carlos Flores posted on Facebook that there had been a gas leak and an explosion.
The city's emergency medical service has sent nine ambulances to the scene and found "multiple" people injured, although a spokesperson could not immediately say how many. Desiree Partain of MedStar said there are not any fatalities reported so far but stressed that they were still assessing the situation. Partain said she could not characterize the types of injuries that medical staff were finding and said she did not know their cause.
According to the hotel website, the Sandman Signature Fort Worth Downtown Hotel has 245 rooms and was built in 1920 as the "Waggoner Building," named after cattle rancher and oilman William Thomas Waggoner. The building has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979. Source
