AUTOMOBILES/BUS DOOM........

At least 16 people are killed and 27 injured after a bus crashes into a truck, teeters on a bridge and then plunges 45ft in Brazil

At least 16 people have died and 27 were injured after the bus they were in collided with a truck, teetered on a bridge and then plunged 45ft in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais on Friday.  The bus was traveling on the 217-mile marker of highway BR-381 in city of João Monlevade when it was involved in the crash with the tractor trailer at approximately at 1.30pm.   The impact of the accident forced the bus off the lane and left it dangling near the damaged concrete guard rail.  Preliminary reports from the Federal Highway Patrol indicate the driver abandoned the bus with the passengers inside. According to Brazilian news outlet G1, motorists at the scene said the bus driver attempted to put the coach in reverse.   Witnesses said that at least four people left the bus moment before it plunged 45 feet to the railroad track below.  Video posted by concerned motorists showed the bus wreckage in flames while fire fighters canvassed the area looking for survivors.    At least three of the injured passengers, including two children, were airlifted and taken João XXIII Emergency Hospital, in Belo Horizonte, and listed in critical condition.  The crash is the second deadly accident in a week in Brazil after a collision between a bus and a truck killed 42 people in Taguaí, São Paulo, last Wednesday. Authorities declared 40 people dead at the scene and two others at a local hospital.   Source

Fiery train derailment under investigation in Whatcom County

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Federal investigators are assisting local authorities in investigating what caused a tanker train hauling crude oil to derail in Whatcom County Tuesday morning. There have been no reported injuries. Cleanup continued Wednesday as crews work to clear the train cars, debris, and crude oil that leaked from the cars. Officials said it could take months to get the area fully cleaned up. During a press conference Wednesday morning, a spokesperson for BNSF said three cars ruptured in the derailment and it's still unknown how much oil may have leaked. The Washington Department of Ecology is on the scene to examine the environmental impacts of the derailment and fire. So far, the department's spokesperson David Byers said their crews have found minimal environmental impacts from the spill and no wildlife impacts, but they will continue to investigate. An estimated six tank cars derailed near Custer at 11:46 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Whatcom County Sherrif's Office. Two train cars burst into flames. Oil continued to burn in two of the tanker cars Tuesday night, but the final flames were put out around 8 p.m., officials said. Source

3 engines, 7 cars on BNSF train derail in Yakima County after semi-truck crash

YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash. — Three engines and seven cars of a BNSF train derailed in Yakima County after a semi-truck crash on Wednesday morning, authorities said.   The freight train derailed at State Route 22 and Phillips Road, about two miles east of the small town of Mabton, when it was hit by a semi-truck with a piece of farm equipment on it, the Yakima County Sheriff's Office said in a tweet. Deputies notified the Washington State Patrol and BNSF Railway, along with the state Department of Ecology. At least two of the train engines leaked diesel fuel onto the ground, according to a tweet from the Department of Ecology. Oil and diesel did not spill into a waterway.  The railroad tracks are in a rural area of Yakima County next to a cornfield, the Department of Ecology said. Vacuum trucks were pumping the remaining diesel out of the train engines' tanks as of 2:50 p.m. before crews focused on removing pooled oil and fuel from the ground.  Source

Two lady terrorists were arrested for terrorist attack at Washington railroad in November

Two Bellingham women arrested on charges of terrorist attack at a railroad The women were allegedly seen on surveillance placing shunts on railroad tracks in Bellingham.

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Two women from Bellingham were arrested Saturday on charges of a terrorist attack on a railroad facility by allegedly placing a "shunt" on the tracks.

A "shunt" disrupts the low-level electrical current on the tracks and can disable various safety features. It's comprised of magnets and wires that are stretched between the tracks and they disrupt the systems that indicate that a train is on the tracks.

On Nov. 28, police with BNSF saw two people kneeling on the tracks near a crossing in Bellingham via surveillance video. The two people were later identified as the two women arrested. Police said a shunt was found on the tracks where the two had been seen on surveillance.

Police said the women had a paper bag containing wire, a drill with a brush head, and rubber gloves. The wire was similar to the wire used in the shunting incidents. The shunt that was placed on the tracks would have interfered with the railroad crossing guard at Cliffside Drive in Bellingham, according to BNSF police.

According to the criminal complaint, the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force has been investigating the placement of shunts on the BNSF tracks since Jan. 19

“Since January, there have been 41 incidents of shunts placed on the BNSF tracks in Whatcom and Skagit counties—causing crossing guards to malfunction, interfering with automatic braking systems, and, in one case, causing the near-derailment of tanks of hazardous chemicals,” said U.S. Attorney Brian Moran.

The charge of terrorist attack on a railroad facility is punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.  Source
